Film star’s marriage not valid, says court

KUALA TERENGGANU: The Kuala Terengganu Syariah High Court here yesterday ruled that the marriage between popular film star and director Aziz M. Osman (real name Aziz Othman) and ustazah (religious teacher) Nor Radhiah Ramli, 23, as not valid under Islamic law.

Datuk Ismail Yahya, the High Court Judge and Syariah Chief Justice, arrived at the decision after finding Nor Radhiah, who is the applicant in the case, to have not completed her edah (period barring a woman from remarriage after divorce) from her first husband when she married Aziz on Aug 16, last year.

In his 32-page judgment, Ismail also said Nor Radhiah, when applying to marry Aziz in Kuala Terengganu, had stated that she was an unmarried woman when in fact she had been ordered by the Kuala Terenganu Lower Syariah Court to undergo the edah from July 28.

Before her marriage to Aziz, Nor Radhiah had married Engku Ahmad Hisham in Pengkalan Kubor, Kelantan, on April 4 last year, but it was subsequently not recognised as the solemnisation took place in Narathiwat, Songkhla, Thailand.

Nor Radhiah then married Aziz, a widower with five children, in Masjid Padang Nenas, Tepuh, Kuala Terengganu on Aug 16, with the solemnisation done by her father Ramli Yusuf, 52.
It was witnessed by the local marriage solemnisation officer, Ismail Yusuf, 63, who is also her uncle.

The court then ordered the duo to live separately for a minimum of two edah periods. — Bernama
